De Havilland reclines on plush fur-covered cushions wearing a white swimsuit, her ankles crossed and adorned with a decorative ankle bracelet. The dramatic studio lighting creates a luminous spotlight effect behind her, highlighting her elegant profile and signature finger-wave hairstyle. This oversized 8×9.5 inch silver gelatin print is a beautifully composed studio publicity photograph from Warner Bros. Taken during the peak of de Havilland’s early Hollywood career. This photograph originates from the estate collection of Miss Gladys Sylvia, a dedicated Hollywood memorabilia collector who acquired photos directly from celebrities and studios. Historical Notes At the time this photograph was taken, Olivia de Havilland was one of Warner Bros. Biggest stars, appearing in beloved films like The Adventures of Robin Hood (1938) opposite Errol Flynn. However, she was deeply unhappy with the studio system’s control over her career. In 1943, she filed a landmark lawsuit against Warner Bros. Challenging the practice of extending contracts as punishment for refusing roles. Her victory in the 1944 California Court of Appeal case – known as the De Havilland Law – fundamentally changed Hollywood labor practices and freed actors from indefinite studio servitude. Liberated from Warner Bros. She went on to win two Academy Awards for Best Actress, for To Each His Own (1946) and The Heiress (1949). De Havilland lived an extraordinarily long life, relocating to Paris in the 1950s and passing away in July 2020 at the age of 104, making her one of the last surviving stars of Hollywood’s Golden Age. Text Present Back: No significant text present. Print analysis This is a Type 1 original photograph, a silver gelatin studio print produced contemporaneously with the photo session in the late 1930s. The print is on heavy-weight, double-weight photographic paper consistent with Warner Bros. Studio output of the period. The back is blank, which is common for studio prints that were distributed directly to fans or retained for personal collections rather than press use. The tonal range is rich with deep blacks and creamy highlights characteristic of original period Hollywood glamour photography. The print size of 8×9.5 inches is a standard oversize studio format of the era. There are no signs of later reproduction techniques. The provenance from the Gladys Sylvia estate, a known collector who acquired material directly from studios and celebrities, further supports authenticity as a period original. This is an extremely rare vintage Japanese robe featuring many great classic cartoon characters. All the biggest names are here – Betty Boop, Mickey Mouse, Oswald the Lucky Rabbit, Pluto, Flip the Frog, and Bosko. Bosko is never on anything! I believe it is a yukata which is like a kimono. Based on the characters, I judge it likely to be made sometime in the 1930s. Of course there is wear from age throughout, with yellowing, staining on interior, many insect holes, and thinning fabric.
