Original National Film Theatre programme for “A Tribute to the Warner Brothers”, a major retrospective season devoted to Warner Bros and its contribution to American cinema. Produced for the National Film Theatre in London, the retrospective ran through February, March, April and May 1956, making this a particularly interesting piece of early British film-institution history. The National Film Theatre’s permanent South Bank building did not open until 1957. The programme charts the history and development of Warner Bros, with extensive illustrated features covering some of the studio’s best-known films, actors and directors. Highlights include: Humphrey Bogart – The Treasure of the Sierra Madre James Cagney – White Heat, Angels with Dirty Faces and other gangster films Bette Davis – including Jezebel Ginger Rogers – 42nd Street and Gold Diggers of 1933 Paul Muni – The Life of Emile Zola and Juarez Doris Day – Calamity Jane Marlon Brando and Vivien Leigh – A Streetcar Named Desire Humphrey Bogart and Ingrid Bergman – Casablanca John Huston and other major Warner directors Extensive period photographs, film artwork and studio history Also included is the separate National Film Theatre Warner Brothers retrospective leaflet, listing individual Saturday screenings including 42nd Street, White Heat, The Petrified Forest, Casablanca, A Streetcar Named Desire and The Treasure of the Sierra Madre. An especially interesting opening feature reproduces the 1946 Society of Motion Picture Engineers Scroll of Achievement presented to Warner Brothers, recognising the studio’s pioneering contribution to sound motion pictures. The programme has historic punched filing holes, as shown clearly in the photographs. The separate retrospective schedule is also present. A scarce and substantial piece of Warner Bros and National Film Theatre history, considerably more interesting than a standard single-film cinema programme.
